   political figure
   Born in Paris, Maurice Schumann, having rejoined General charles de gaulle in London in 1940 during World War II, was the spokesperson for Free France (France libre) on the BBC. A member of the Consultative Assembly (provisional) from 1944 to 1946, he served as deputy (beginning in 1945), then senator (1974-98), and contributed to the founding of the mouvement républicain populaire, for which he served as president from 1945 to 1949. Secretary of state for foreign affairs (1951-54), minister in charge of the development of territory (1962), minister of state from 1967 to 1969, he was minister of foreign affairs from 1969 to 1973. Schumann was elected into the Académie Française in 1974.
